Oct 4, 2007 2007 Season, Demarcus Faggins sucks, Gary Kubiak might be high
I’m sitting here, hungover as hell, hoping to find something that will take my mind of the fact that I need to barf, when I got word that Gary Kubiak had basically told me to fist myself. No, he didn’t say it directly, but what else can I make of this quote:
“Petey’s our starter,” Kubiak said. “I believe in him. He’ll be there starting this weekend. He’s going to play good; I believe in the kid. He’s had a few misfortunate plays, which happens in football if you’re a corner. That’s part of the business. You’ve got to have a short memory.”
The head coach hopes Faggins can forget his Atlanta performance and regain the confidence he needs to go against Dolphins wideouts Marty Booker and Chris Chambers.
“If he gets the ball coming his way, his confidence goes way back up and he starts playing well,” Kubiak said. “We believe in him, and I’m expecting him to play well.”
Look, we’ve been over this a hundred times, so I’m not even going to rehash the “why he shouldn’t be playing” stuff.
What bothers me, though, is the lack of logic (and notable absence of facts) in this decision. Kubes says Petey’s “going to play good” because Gary “believe[s] in the kid.” Well, you probably believed in him in week 2. And week 3. And week 4 (before you yanked him off the field). He didn’t play “good” in any of those. So why in God’s name would you suddenly expect that he will?
Kubiak says Faggins has “had a few misfortunate plays.” That’s one way to put it. Another way would be to say that he’s had “QUITE a few misfortunate plays.” And yet another way would be to say that he has “managed a couple of plays that you wouldn’t call ‘misfortunate.’”
Finally, Coach K says that, “[if Petey] gets the ball coming his way, his confidence goes way back up and he starts playing well.” Wha? The ball has been coming his way NON-STOP this season. Opposing teams WANT the ball to go his way. I have no idea how you can imply that a lack of chances is why Petey has played like a retarded midget out there.
Gah. You are not helping my headache, Gary. Not one bit.

Matt,
Don’t Jump ! Come on down off the ledge. They don’t know if Bennett is 100% yet. Not only that he’s a rookie and hasn’t seen much time on the field in the regular season. It’s just coach speak. He’s going to be on a short leash. But I think in Kube’s head he doesn’t have much of a choice other that to start him. Whats he supposed to say at the press conference ? We’re starting Petey because we got nobody else ? He’s just trying to keep the guys head up. And you might think I’m crazy but I wouldn’t start Fletcher over Fagains either. Benett just needs to get healthy and get on the field to prove what he can do.

Hey, think of it this way: he’s got to say this. If they end up not being able to yank him off the field, they at least want to be able to pretend they were never going to.
And if you’re going to gank him, he doesn’t need to see it coming, right?
Maybe that’s why there’s no logic behind his arguments, because he can’t figure out a way to say the things he has to say and still make sense.

Petey on Chris Chambers could be awesome for its expected ineptitude…
Petey gets beat deep… Chambers drops the ball. Or Green underthrows it. Or Chambers runs the wrong route (again).

Was Petey torched this bad last year, or are there higher expectations now (and therefore more focus on him)? I don’t recall it being this ugly in the past, but then again, Matt was lobbying for a replacement well before the first preseason game.
It could have something to do with me watching the games on Tivo, fast forwarding until I saw a highlight (due to limted time). No wonder why it only took 30-45 minutes to watch, huh?

Petey was way more effective last year when he was sidelined with a foot injury. His ineffectiveness didn’t start to show until he got back on the field.

Coachspeak, my brother, Coachspeak. Look at what Kubiak said about Captain Conditioner when this regime took over. Do you think, in retrospect, that he meant all of those things he was saying about Carr having the goods to succeed? Of course not, but ownership wanted a payoff from their #1 pick, and Kubiak did what he could and said what he had to say. Now, we’ve got a couple of struggling vets (Petey and Fletcher) and an untested rookie vying for the #2 CB spot. The two that don’t end up winning the job still have to play for us. A good coach is never gonna slam anyone on the active roster. Hell, Kubes won’t even saying anything bad about Carr now….
(a different Robert, btw)

It can mean two things:
1. We don’t have better options….now (said as it related to Chad Stanley, David Carr)
2. We have confidence in this guy, this week. (said as it related to the revolving door running backs last year and this year. “Yeah, I believe in (Gado,Dayne,Lundy). They need to continue to work hard blah blah blah. Yes _____ is a concern, and we will work on that is this week. ” And then they ended up getting shelved for a bit while they tried new things out.
I am guessing #1.
BTW, check out the practice quotes today. Mathis is being checked out in the hospital. They know what the problem is, they just need to know how bad. Rumor is blood clot.

There is no need to talk so bad about retarded midgets. We all know they could play corner MUCH better than Petey.
