Punk in Drublic
Oct 10, 2007 Beer, Drunky Drunkerton, Self-Referential Stuff
Lost in the hoopla and hullabaloo surrounding Travis Johnson is the fact that the second DGDB&D/BRB BLOG DORK DRINKING PARTY is less than two weeks away.
Unfortunately, as of right now, that is the only detail we have for said party. I am going to list all of the places mentioned through email or comments and I am asking any (all) of you–especially those who might actually show up–to opine on the merits of one or more. First, the parameters:
1. The party is set for Saturday night, October 20. Because it’s a Saturday night, things like Sunday ticket are not important, though that is probably a good sign regarding the quality of the bar.
2. Assuming it’s not raining, we’d be almost retarded to not be outside if at all possible, considering nighttime in Houston in October is about the only time one doesn’t run the risk of spontaneous combustion by being outside. (I kid because I love. Seriously, though… outside is cool.)
3. Nothing “hip.” God, I hate hip. Because I am not hip. I am old, chubby, and have the face of a 19-year-old. There is nothing hip about me. If you made a list of uncool people, the only people above me would be BFD, Kirk Cameron, the entire population of North Dakota, and Tony Blair.
4. It clearly must serve alcohol.
With all that said, here are the places.
1. Wet Spot
2. Buffalo Wild Wings (note: rumor has that they don’t serve liquor as late as other places)
3. Flying Saucer–gotta love any place with that much beer
4. Griff’s–Irish pubs are always nice
5. Kenneally’s–see above
6. Front Porch
7. Jimmie’s–Tim described this place as a “complete dump that serves Pearl in a can and lets you bring your own liquor; I hope to get married here one day.”
8. Kay’s
9. Marquis–adult book store turned into a bar, but lacking a porch/patio/deck

At this point, I’m casting my vote for Jimmie’s. This weekend, I am also planning on checking out another neighborhood tavern called The Dutchman. I’ve heard good things about that place as well (read: bring your own liquor and cheap beer), so it may quickly be elevated to contender status.

Why not hit up the Flying Saucer? It’s a little on the “hip” side, but everyone’s guaranteed to find a beer they like and it offers outside seating. Granted, the seating outside is rather limited, but that should be more than made up for by the hundreds of different brands of beer.

Saucer is nice. We have one here and I’ve been to the one in Memphis and neither seemed too trendy. I assume that varies by city, though.
On the other hand, cheap booze and a place where you might leave needing a tetanus shot is always appealing.

Damnit… I always miss the good parties! I am so not fagginated about that.
Anyways, from a guy who can’t go, but knows all about the Flying Saucer, go there. With all the beer selection, how can you go wrong?

“the only people above me would be BFD”
Eh, no argument here.
I don’t know many. The BW3s are OK. Griff’s ain’t exactly an Irish pub as much as it’s a sports bar, but it’s an old fave. Marquis is definitely more for the rich, young, cool people, though we might see Rudy T hanging out and hitting on the 21 year old chicks.
I don’t really care. The part of town works well for me, though, as I will be staying in mid-town (I think that’s what that area is called).
I guess I can take solace that I know I am cooler than Liston.
XOXOX,
bfd

Oh yeah, my preference would be a sports bar as there should, as Matt mentioned, be some baseball on.

I would recommend Front Porch Pub. They have many tv’s inside, as well as one big screen on the patio. Also, they have a pretty good selection of beer on tap, but the house specialty, Frozen Screwdrivers, will make you see double in no time.
Also, I ordered a Fried Buffalo Chicken Sandwich there during the Atlanta game that was awesome… (drooling over memory of sandwich)

Also, I’m not sure if bfd has been to the Marquis lately, but it is one of the biggest shit holes I go to. It is definitely not “cool”, although you can get Red Bull vodkas in a mason jar for six bucks.
Also for bfd, Front Porch is in the exact center of Mid Town, as is Wet Spot.

Thanks, badfish! I think, in the dark, dark recesses in my mind, I remember stumbling into Front Porch at some point when I was in Houston last year. I could be wrong, though.
Marquis: Yeah, it’s been a while. I mostly remember being the oldest person there by 10 years, and that was a couple of years ago.

Almost forgot…
We need to make sure that, wherever we go, they have one of the following available for Matt:

After that, we can call him a cab or ambulance to take him home, whichever is necessary.

The odds of me slipping some sort of poison or date-rape drug into your beer while you aren’t looking just went up 300%.

Date rape drug???
Wow, you really are getting into the Arkansas “swing” of things, aren’t you? Way to acclimate yourself.
Hey Steph: I wonder what it would take to get A-M there to lay the smack down on Matt live and in person?

Good luck finding a parking spot at the Front Porch pub on a Saturday evening/night…
Wetspot is down the street and parking is a bit easier…
Flying Saucer downtown is great for games…
Which BW3s you looking at (Kirby or new one in midtown)?
Marquis is a, um, dump… hangover for 20 year old Rice chicks.

Front Porch Pub has a nice selection of beer, but yeah, the parking around there is a little sketchy.
John-Uh, A-M is nice but I’m not sure she is that nice.
“Hey, A-M, do you want to spend your Saturday night to meet some blogger guy who has a really poor opinion of you and expresses it in writing?”
Uh no.

Express it in writing???
Steph, you and I think very, very differently.

Ah, *expresses* it in writing. I feel much shame.
Still, is it so bad I want to see A-M smack Matt around? Does that make me a bad person?
Didn’t think so.

Now, goddamnit, I’ve got $20 that says I can take A-M. Unless she, like, starts singing and gets me all disoriented.

Re: Flying Saucer. While I agree that the beer selection makes it a nice choice, the fact that everyone will either have to arrive at 6 to find street parking or pay $10 to park in the nearby garage, PLUS the scant amount of outdoor seating likely to be available by 7 or 8 makes it a less-than-ideal choice.

Kays reminds me of an era where my liver was tested more regularly. Does The Volcano around there still exist?
