On the horns of an enema - Scraps at CB
Feb 21, 2008 2008 Draft, 2008 Season, Casserly blows goats... I have proof, DeAngelo Hall, Demarcus Faggins sucks, Dunta Robinson, I hate everything, Nnamdi Asomugha, Secondary issues are primary
Now that Nnamdi Asomugha has broken Matt’s heart like so many Anna-Megans, let’s take a look at some of the least sucky options at cornerback still available.
Marcus Trufant - Franchise tag. Not a surprising move by the Seasquawks, but it means he’s out.
DeAngelo Hall - Yeah, we have consensus that he’s an asswipe. I’ve always been of the opinion, however, that as long as you play for the team, being an asswipe isn’t all bad (see Sanders, Deion). But I’m not sure if Hall qualifies for that level. And considering the baggage he carries, and that the Falcons allegedly want a first round pick for him, fuck him. Of course, there’s the chance that we can dick the Falcons on a deal again, which definitely gives me warm fuzzies.
Asante Samuel - We’ve previously brushed Samuel aside for contract size reasons, but considering what Trufant and Nnamdi are getting, is that the market for a CB? Perhaps it’s now something to consider?
Lito Sheppard - A dirty, unsubstantiated rumor has the Eagles interested in Samuel because they think Sheppard has a glass jaw. If the Eagles do sign Samuel, I think Sheppard is gone.
Jacques Reeves - Ugh, a cowpoke, and one who was picked on during the year. But, sheesh, this is the territory we are starting to hit. Reeves is an unrestricted free agent.
Randall Gay - When watching the Patriots this year, it seemed to me that the Pats had two weak links in their secondary: King Asshole Rodney Harrison, and Randall Gay. Yet, Gay might be the most likely option as of today. Still, Gay can be flammable at times, and I kinda see him as a more expensive Petey. There, I said it..
Brian Kelly - Dude, you lost your job to P-Buch? Seriously? What, did you fall asleep on the field?
Drayton Florence - You can add him to the flammable list.
Chris Carr - Has seen most of his action on special teams, including as a punt returner.
Have I missed anybody?
Look at this list. It’s pretty pathetic at this point. There’s a chance somebody like Ricky Manning becomes available after the first round of salary cuts, and I wouldn’t mind him in the least. But, still, the lack of feasible CBs, along with Dunta’s injury, means that we have to address CB a lot sooner than later. Even though I am against huge mega-contracts, I think Samuel may be the only decent option out there, even if we have to overpay.
The way I look at it: we either overpay for mediocrity, or we overpay for above average production.
Or, of course, we take a CB in the draft with our 1st or 3rd round pick.
PS: Look, Matt, I bolded names all by myself. I’m a big boy today!
PPS: If you can name the show from where I got the reference in the title, give yourself a cookie.

Re: Hall–thing is, the only person who really thinks he is even above average is himself. He’s not only not as good as he advertises–he actually sucks when he plays any WRs with any talent at all. I did a post on it at one point, but I am too lazy to dig.

You know I only go back and bold the names because I am anal retentive. Just like I am about to add the Texans logo at the top of the post. I’d never change your material, but I have no choice when it comes to formatting.

well….i believe that it would be much better for us to invest in a free agent cb than to try and draft one. although the fred did well this year as a rookie, we really don’t need to take the chance on another rookie getting it done for us. if that means we need to pony up a pick from next year to trade or throw out some fat cash to sign a free agent, i think we should. i also feel that it would be much better to use our third round pick on a rb that would have a much easier time coming in and contributing immediately.

Dominique Foxworth is a RFA this year. With Denver rebuilding it’s Oline because of age and Lepis’ retirement, we might be able to grab him. He’s not great but I see him as an upgrade over Faggins or Von Hutchins. He could play nickel or dime for us.

Matt, that’s not fair. That’s like being the program director at a Top 40 radio station and answering the sound of the day to win Spice Girl tickets for yourself. Now, I’ll have to eat something else.

WOW! A writer at ESPN actually wrote something intelligent about the drafting of Super Mario and the combine.

@Rob: I was wondering if somebody would catch that. And it’s said in jest, of course.
-
@Aaron: I was wondering if I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Foxworth, and I guess I was. I think the Broncs are still dealing with Darrent Williams’ death, and Champ Bailey is starting to have injury dings. With Foxworth a restricted free agent, I don’t see any way the Broncs *don’t* re-up his contract. He’s just too valuable a commodity to let slip away easily.

And, with apologies, I missed this write-up by Chris about the Texans free agent situation:

Capers emergency option in New England???:
http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm
POSTED 9:29 a.m. EST, February 22, 2008
IS CAPERS THE CONTINGENCY PLAN?
Several members of PFT Planet have raised an intriguing question about the addition of Dom Capers to the coaching staff in New England.
Is Capers, as one reader put it, the “break glass in case of emergency” option in the event that Spygate II goes to hell in a handbasket and Bill Belichick gets suspended by the league and/or fired by the team?
The answer might lie in Capers’ contract, which almost certainly will never be exposed to the light of day. If there’s a written provision making him the head coach in the event of any sudden “incapacity” of Belichick, then this means that the powers-that-be have planned for the possibility, however remote it might be, that something bad could happen if/when Matt Walsh ever shows what he has and says what he knows.
By having Capers’ elevation reduced to writing, the Pats wouldn’t be required to adhere to the Rooney Rule if/when a vacancy arises. Indeed, if the worst-case scenario (i.e., NFL suspends Belichick and the evidence is sufficiently compelling to force Bob Kraft to fire him) unfolds in, say, June, the franchise surely would want to make a quick transition. Starting a coaching search from scratch wouldn’t be the way to make that happen.
The other possibility is that offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels would be elevated to head coach and Capers would take over the defense. But McDaniels is still on the “ridiculously freaking young” side, and Capers has nine years of experience as a head coach with two expansion teams.

@Mark: hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Please, please make this happen God. In a week Brady will be throwing 180 yard, 1 TD 2 pick games and the Patriots will be back where they belong, ignored by their fans.
Unfortunately, this comes from PFT, which was responsible for several stories this year that were mostly bullshit so my hopes are low.

As I wrote this to BFD in an email, I’ll post it here (by permission, of course);
Oh, I agree but, even considering Capers as your DC (Tuna tossed his salad out of Miami, after that train wreck) would be a Trojan horse and further the melt down in NE, if Billy-bob gets run out of town (or the league).
Given the the congressional attention to Spygate I & II(?) and their financial resource (us) to continue any investigation, the current storm in NE won’t go away anytime soon. To add a Capers in this cluster fuck would be a ship wreck of Titanic proportions!

I doubt that Capers will surface as coach in NE. I think his main problem is an inability to accurately value talent, which is the strength of the organization in NE. Besides, he will be the secondary coach, not a coordinator.

Is he the best available?….Of course. But he is about to get overpaid like an MLB starting pitcher the last 2 years.

Brian Kelly (Bucs CB) opted out of his contract and Michael Huff is available via trade. Wouldn’t it be nice to grab those two with one fell swoop? Certainly would change the draft board.
