Quick notes - 2/29
Feb 29, 2008 Secondary issues are primary
I’ve got a super busy day today, but there were a couple of haps last night/this morning to talk about.
Happy trails to Jerome Mathis. Wait, not happy trails. What’s the term I am looking for? Oh yeah. Jerome, bite me. See ya,pal.
“Word out of Houston” is that the Texans and Vikes have broken off trade talks, which would send Houston a pick for Sage Rosenfels. I can’t even begin to tell you how disappointed that makes me. Sage for anything would kick ass. The sad fact is that, with Sage at the helm, I don’t think we are a playoff capable team. He’s a backup. He had a career year. It’s called trading high. Take a 3rd and 4th or 5th for him, and be happy.
C Rex Hadnot is coming in for a visit. The Lufkin native likely has Houston at the top of his charts, but we don’t need to acquire another C who’s not an appreciable upgrade (if at all) over what we already have…especially when he wants $5MM/year. We need a LT. Let’s save some dough for one of those.
Jacques Reeves, formerly of the Dallas Childmolesters, is coming in for a visit. The dude is going to strike it rich, and he’s got literal cleat marks on his back. He was picked on all year by opposing offenses. If we are the team to make him rich, I can guarantee that I will make him the new bfd DGDB&D whipping boy. DO NOT SIGN HIS ASS! EDIT: What Tim said.
Finally, a dios to Cedric Killings, who is retiring after his horrific neck injury last year against the Dolts. As I’ve gotten older, I realize how hard it is to stop doing something you love due to physical limitations. There are many athletes who just go too long and lose their quality of life as a result. Killings has physically returned to normal, but he is at great risk for permanent injury in case he has a similar collision. I feel for him, but I also congratulate him on his career and, most importantly, on his decision.

Although I was disappointed that trade talks were broken off, I think that may be posturing by our staff. With Todd Collins and Derek Anderson both signed as of this morning, the options for Minnesota are looking pretty grim. They’re rumored to want Cleo Lemon but I don’t think he’s nearly as good as Sage. And you are correct, Sage is only a backup who had a good season last year. I definitely don’t think he’s starter material. I thoroughly expect Minnesota to come back to the table with a better offer than just a 3rd round pick.

Fantasy wish: Sage to Minnesota for 2nd round pick. We sign Trent Green to backup the Schaub. Green has a psychotic episode due to post concussion syndrome and runs over Travis Johnson with his Escalade 17 times in the parking lot at Reliant. Then we could talk about the “essence of Travis”.

I too am on board with sending Sage to be a potential starter elsewhere for whatever we can get. He was good in his role last year, but he’s not the end-all as a starter. Others out there can do as well, and hopefully, we’ll never have to worry about who our backup is again (fingers crossed). If they can give us a 3rd this year and next, I’d say jump all over that gravy train.

With Cleo Lemon off the market to the Jags, Minnesota coming back to us with a 2nd round pick is inevitable.

Sage- start packing your shit and see if David Carr will let you borrow his mittens. Minnesota is one cold mofo.

Jags just signed Jerry Porter apparently. I don’t like that one bit… If anything, we’ve always at least been able to count on the Jags having slow, crappy receivers.

Oh, and in the line of Hadnot being looked at… would this mean that McKinney moves back to his original, and better postition of Guard? Double upgrade? Me likey.
Also, on Reeves… I guess we’re just going to have to revert back to trusting what Kubes and Smith have seen on tape, and letting them make the call. Say what you will about Reeves, but Smithiak didn’t choose Petey. That was a Casserly goof. I’ll keep the trust until they prove unworthy.

Rumors that I enlisted BFD’s help on this blog solely because he shares my outlook on what we should do with Sage are at least plausible. I would take a 3d for him and shit sunshine. A second would make me build an altar to Rick Smith (right beside my twin altars for Andre Johnson and DeMeco Ryans).

@nash: Well, they might have upgraded the speed, but Porter doesn’t really change the “crappy” designation.

Am I the only one who wishes they would cut Matt Jones and he would come to Houston? Probably.

I would like to keep Sage because:
1. You need two good quarterbacks in this league to have a shot at a good season unless you have a lot of luck.
2. The Texans haven’t had a lot of luck.
3. The offensive line might struggle with the transition to a mostly ZBS.
4. It’s not like the Texans #3 QB is someone to write home about.
5. Rosenfels is a good lockerroom guy and smart.
6. Rosenfels is a good guy to provide competition for Schaub.
7. Schaub is coming off of shoulder surgery on his non-throwing arm. I’m a Texan fan so I’m traumatized by the words “shoulder surgery” because of Boselli.
8. There is no 8.
9. I’ve seen enough horrible QB play to last for my entire life. I’d rather that position be one of the few on the team that is a position of strength instead of question mark. If you are messed up at QB, your team is messed up.
10.Schaub hasn’t shown that he can make it through a whole season. I’d rather have Rosenfels back there than have to get Kubiak to have to spend time and effort coaching up someone new.
11. I don’t have that draft bias that some fans have that the guy we get in the draft is going to be better than the guy we trade. We know what commodity Rosenfels is (can win games, can throw picks), and if we get rid of him, we just create another need on the team.

Yea you’re right, but, Rosy is only a back up. He didn’t win any games, he just did his job, and did it marginally. The team won the games. I think that could have been done by other QB’s without all the interceptions. We don’t need to glorify him above his talent. But you’re right, that gives us another hole to fill. And I hate disagreeing with Steph, for a number of reasons.
P.S. I like Sophia…wisdom….awesome.

Today, I say no to a 3rd rounder for Sage.
On draft day, I might take that deal. I just think we can’t take a 3rd straight out when someone might get desperate and throw a little more our way. If Schaub was durable at ALL, I’d pull the trigger immediately, despite Sage’s performances last year.

Dear vishnu… Asante just got damn near ten million a year.
And @Matt: I’m not so sure about that. Porter was kind of nasty for a couple years. Not to mention, the last Raiders receiver to make it out of that shithole went on and had a decent season.
Let’s just hope Moss doesn’t end up on Tennessee. I realize that Vince Young is terrible, but every QB in the league (sans Zoolander) could be respectable throwing it to him.

FWIW, Brian Griese might eventually end up being released by the Bears. I believe he is fond of Kubiak. Sounds like a potential backup to me.

@nash: you are exactly right. I just hate Porter because he screwed my fantasy team a few years back. Hopefully, he gets hurt so we don’t have to consider it.
–
@Steph: I love me some Brian Greise. I am totally in favor of that move.

David may not need the mittens where he’s going. Came across this article this morning and laughed out loud.

The best part is the “right now” angle. As with all pro-David rants, it comes down to “You know, he was the No. 1 pick once upon a time…”

Do the 49ers have a limitless fucking cap? Why have they been able to do so many big contracts? I know that they had a lot of money come off the past two seasons, but what the fuck?
CB and S are two positions that need to be sorely addressed. We should have been able to throw a chunk of change at one of them and still be in pretty good cap shape, if the numbers we’ve been figuring are accurate. That said, I want Michael Turner. Change the complexion of the team and set us up for years to come. I am on board with not wanting to throw big money at just anyone, but we have a good chance for something big here. Role players and depth are great and absolutely necessary (see ridiculous IR this year), but we still need some home run hitters (or starting caliber NFL players, at least).
A lot of guys who would have been a nice fit here have already left the building. Those contracts, while a little pricey, apppear to be market value. I hope we don’t keep waiting for the perfect guy with the perfect contract parameters. That’s just not going to happen. A big piece or two every year would make me happy. Okay, I’m done.

SEVERAL TEAMS INTERESTED IN SHEPPARD by Michael David Smith
It’s only been 24 hours since the Philadelphia Eagles signed cornerback Asante Samuel, but they’re already hearing from teams interested in trading for the cornerback Samuel replaced in the starting lineup.
A league source tells PFT that several teams are showing preliminary interest in trading for cornerback Lito Sheppard. Those teams include the Texans, Saints, Buccaneers, Browns, Rams and Jets.
A team can never have too many good cornerbacks, and the Eagles could choose to keep Sheppard, especially if they move right cornerback Sheldon Brown to safety. But given how much interest there is in Sheppard, it seems more likely that he’ll be shipped elsewhere.

Are you fucking kidding me? We have a serious need at CB and this is their answer? The following is a direct quote from Rotoworld.
-
Texans signed CB Jacques Reeves.
We’ve heard some positive comments on Reeves, which is surprising. His numbers suggest he was one of the most picked-on corners in the league. Houston badly needs depth with Dunta Robinson hurt, but they should hope Reeves has a small role.
