Open Thread for 3/6

I’ve been either super busy (voting and studying), ill, or helping take care of my super sick daughter since my post on Tuesday, so apologies for the Cone of Silence from my end. I’ve got a horribly busy day at my bill-paying job, so I’m going to make this an open thread for all the actions going on around foosball. And here’s a couple of links to get you started.

Greg Cote of the Miami Herald believes in GLOVE POWER!!! You know, if journalists were held to any kind of intellectual standards, he’d already be looking for a new job. Alas, the best we can do is laugh and point. (h/t Eric)

If you haven’t seen this by Steph, you are a liberal fascist communist who hates America, Cuba, and Xenu.

Assorted sources: The Texans will have or have had G Jake Scott, S Chris Crocker, DE Corey Smith, and C John Wade in for visits. Crocker would compete with CC Brown at SS, but more likely he’d be a backup for the Ladies Man and CC. Smith is quick but undersized and good on special teams, but I still think we’ll be looking for a long-term answer opposite Mario in the draft. Wade would be a backup at C and possibly G. For the right price, none of the last three guys would nauseate me, though I don’t think Smith would stick on the 47-man roster.

Scott, however, is intriguing. He’s an athletic G, average build (6′5″, 295 lbs), and only 27 for the season. This is the kind of player I get excited about. The Titans are also in on him, and it’d be nice to give Bud a kick in the nutz.

Open thread for all! Now, to go shake my money-maker.

I think Smith might do better than you give him credit for. To be fair, the only thing I’m basing this off is a piece about him on the Lions official website (http://www.detroitlions.com/document_display.cfm?document_id=463802). Apparently he made the cut in the Bucs defense as an undrafted rookie the year they won the Super Bowl. I’m no professional historian, but it seems like the Bucs defense was slightly above average that year.

On top of that, he went to N.C. State, and if we learned anything from the Ballhawk Gamecock, players are always better when they have someone from their school playing the same position.

    re: Mittens

“And he must have the incentive you’d imagine of a guy who entered the league pegged a future superstar but now shops for his second new team in as many years.”

I’m not sure that’s one of the things “I’d imagine”…but if I were to do so….I would be sadly disappointed.

Smith had 3 tackles and 1 sack over three years with TB. Last year, he recorded 3 sacks over 16 games – only the second time in double digit games – for the Lions. The good news is, he’s a helluva lot more productive than Weaver. But I still think we’ll go DE with one of our first three picks, and before we signed Reeves, I thought it would be our 1st round pick.

Smith might be Antwan Peek redux. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing in situational pass rushing. But I agree that DE will still be a focus at the top of the draft.

    Ok… two things…

    1. Regarding Cote. I went to high school in Miami and can vouch for the fact that that guy is a complete and total dumbass. He rattles off Carr’s measureables without mention of the fact that he can’t actually read defenses and actually play NFL caliber quarterback. He praises the 06 completion percentage and QB rating which validates that he never watched a game that season. He goes on to talk about his college stats with no regard for the previous 6 years of data which again suggests that he can’t play NFL caliber quarterback.
But the best part was talking about “the splendiferous-ness of the man”. I don’t know what that means, but it sounds gay.
Almost as gay as the picture.

    2. That Will Demps video was awesome. I will be severely disappointed if the line “as sexy as you is” doesn’t get into the next fake conversation.

Demps was surprisingly less smooth than I would have expected. In fact, if he weren’t a millionaire pro football player with rugged good looks, I think there’s a chance he doesn’t get to bang that girl.

Nash – I have four children from their late teens to early 20s. Trust me when I tell you that the girls today would regard him as smooth. They would be all over him even if he was a chronically unemployed high school dropout. It would be a plus if he was a jailbird. MTV has elevated the brainless loser to the status of most desired guy in the room.

Okay, I don’t think the picture in that article could have made David Carr look like he was struggling any more to throw that ball.

Unless of course they embedded actually watching him quarterback a game.

    BFD,

If we take a DE before the 5th round then Richard Smith is completely ignoring the massive number of needs this team has.

All we need is a situational pass rusher, those can be found late in the draft and built up – or we can work on developing Cochran.

Like a true pro, Demps keeps checking her vodka level throughout the night. The Smirnoff Dipstick method.

And let Zoolander go to Miami, if they love him so much. Let Travis Johnson snap his head off.

Oh, PLEASE let Miami sign Mr. Mittens! PLEASE!! Miami is coming to Reliant next season. I want to see Super Mario make Mittens cry like a little girl. How many sacks would the Texans go for in that game? 7? 8?

Welcome, ADF. I think I’ve seen you in a geek forum or something previously. You can make that argument with DE for a number of other positions: RB, LT, RG, SLB (though I admit I am excited about Diles or Bentley taking over), SS, and CB (x2?).
    -
I don’t believe we take an OL until at least the 4th as that’s been Kubiak’s pattern, so out go LT and RG. They seem to be pretty secure in SLB and SS. That leaves RB, DE, and CB.
    -
Plus, Kalu is your situation pass rusher (assuming he’s re-signed, which I am). So, yeah, I have pretty much convinced myself we are going DE early (even if I haven’t convinced anybody else).

@Rob: I forgot about that technique. I’ve been married for far too many years to remember how to pull that one off smoothly.

After reading about the depth of the draft for OL..I fear we may not take a tackle with the first pick either…now…shit…my guess is if there is a high ranked RB that slips to us, we’ll take him…and I won’t feel to bad about that either.

(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

I’m with ADF on this. Easily the strongest part of this team is the front 7.

If we had a second round pick, I think it’d be DB in the first than an RB in the second (because of the depth of this RB class), but I don’t think there’ll be any really good RBs in the third, so if all the decent DBs are gone, I wouldn’t be surprised by a reach for a RB in the first.

  16. Andy
(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

    Interesting…
Two posters I can’t remember having ever seen before, and they agree with each other…

Anyways, the front 7 is very strong. Sort of.
I’m content with our LB’s. DeMeco’s amazingness goes without saying. Morlon Greenwood did a good job last year, and I’m confident that Diles will successfully make the transition to OLB. On the actual DL, we’re only halfway there. We have one very good end, and what looks like will be a very good DT. Unfortunately, most traditional 4-3 defenses require two DE’s and two DT’s. Anthony Weaver did not get the job done, and although Earl Cochran did a respectable job in relief, another bookend DE would help cover up our deficiencies in the secondary.
Some would argue that it is better to pressure the quarterback than to have great coverage. I would be one of these people, and I point to the Tennessee game, where we scored 29 points in the 4th quarter as proof. Dunta Robinson, who is generally considered to be a good cornerback, was left to cover some Titans receiver. Dunta was stride for stride with him, but the WR caught it. If we’d had a good pass rushing DE opposite Mario, Kerry Collins would have not had as much time to make that pass.
To recap: There are several positions that we need help with. DE is one of them. If we draft a DE in the first round, it will make it easier for our DB’s. Also, John Hoke (The Defensive Secondary Coach) has already said that he thinks that there are several good DB’s that he thinks will be available as late as the 4th round.
So, this leaves us with DE, DB, RB and LT as our major need positions. Hoke thinks we can get a good DB later. Gibbs thinks we can get a good LT later. Kubiak thinks we can get a good RB later. This leaves DE as the position that needs to be taken early to get a difference maker.

Sorry if this was a bit rambling.

    @Andy

Good thoughts. I could see the Texans taking DE, LT, or DB depending on who’s there at 18. Even if Stewart were there I don’t think they would go RB, but I could see them pulling the trigger on any of the other three.

  18. Elliott
(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

We will only take a RB if mendenhall is there and we will only take a LT if chris williams is there.

(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

I can see us taking either a rb or cb in the first and then whichever one of those we didn’t take in the third unless there’s someone there who is just too good, then i think we have to go line for the next two ro three picks.
