With our 6th round pick in 2008, we draft C Chris Myers - Miami (FL)
Mar 17, 2008 2008 Draft, 2008 Season, Alex Gibbs
In a sign-and-trade deal, the Broncos signed C Chris Myers and sent him to our hometown Texans for a 6th round pick.
Now, I admit I don’t know a ton about the guy, but the Broncos fans on the link don’t seem overly thrilled with the deal. What I do know is that he didn’t stick out to me when I watched the Broncos played last year, which is normally a good thing when you are an OL. He’s an athletic 6′4″ and 300 lb OL who can play both C and G. If there was a trade that said “Hey, we employ ex-Broncos on our team!”, this is that deal.
Getting this guy with a reasonable salary (4 years, $11MM, $3MM guaranteed), fairly young (27 yo), and supposedly athletic OL for a 6th round pick? Yeah, you can consider this deal to be bfd approved (for the record, my personal seal has an eagle holding a pint glass with one wing, a spicy oyster po-boy with the other, and a big-assed jalapeno with its talons).
(On a personal note, sorry for the communications black-out the last couple of days. I had an extremely sick daughter, who’s doing much better now, and some other family issues come up. It was no spring break, I can tell you.)

Hope all is well and welcome back! Our boys are making some waves, but Jacoby was “asleep” at the wheel:

Like the signing and what he brings to the table. Not so much of a “gotta” have at 6 positions, just 4…maybe…kind of…I like the move just the same.

Yeah, there is nothing worse than when your kids are sick, is there?

@bfd: Horseshit. It’s much worse when I am sick. When the kids are sick, I can always use “well, I think I’m going to be at work a little later than usual today.”
I am an AWESOME husband.

No BFD, there isn’t…We didn’t know we pro-created these little petree dishes that catch and bring home all those ailments and it breaks your heart not to be able to fix it and make thing’s right.
Getting sick and hungover from a couple of O’Doule’s doesn’t count cause your older…

Interesting talks between the Texans and the Steelers, according to Thomas Hilton:

Trade down to the 23rd pick and pick up the 88th (their 3rd)! Moving down 5 spots and getting an extra 3rd??!! Hell yes!

I’m digging this trade. Sounds like he’s faster than the average C, and the price seems like a bargain: there aren’t going to be many sure-fire starters in the 6th.
What does this mean for McKinney? Does he move to guard, or down on the depth chart?

I like the trade in principle, but I’d be a little worried about trading away a pick without even knowing who’s going to be there. Who knows, someone could have a Brady-esque drop, and we might miss out on them if we move back. I’m all for trading to get more picks, but I’d just like to know who we’re trading.

I love our management’s ability to pull gold out of the late rounds, but you can’t do much better than an athletic O-lineman who already knows the zone blocking system, plays all three interior line positions, and has another few years on his relatively cheap contract.
Like BFD mentioned, most of the Broncos fans I’ve heard from are genuinely pissed that they let this guy walk. And it wasn’t because their management didn’t think he was any good; it’s because they’re not exactly in good salary cap status.

Thomas Hilton, who, in my opinion, is the best thing at the Chron sports department, also says that the team is talking to Craig Nall. Goodbye, Sage? Same link as Eric.

Also @ Andy
Brady’s drop wasn’t precipitated by anything, really. He wasn’t even the starting QB on his team. Remember, he split time with Drew Henson. I don’t think we can anticipate anything like that happening with this draft.

@ Jersey Bill
I was thinking Brady Quinn. It was before I’d had any coffee this morning, so I can’t really offer up any good explanation for why I wrote Brady-esque instead of Quinn-esque, except maybe that Brady-esque rolls off the tongue better.

I’m hoping that one of the DE/DT tackles that are ranked highly on the Texans board freefalls to 18, so that we don’t have any choice but to draft them. If we trade the 18th pick, and then something like that inexplicably happens, it would be a source for much anguish.

Craig Nall is interesting. I’m not sure how that would affect Sage’s value. It seems to me like if the Vikings knew we were looking to get rid of Sage, that they would be more likely to reduce what they were willing to give up for him. If we get Nall, and then we can’t get the right value for Sage (at least a 3rd), then we’ve basically spent money on Nall for no reason. We’d probably cut one of them come training camp because of this staff’s proclivity to only having two QB’s on the roster. The other option would be to trade Sage now and take one of the teams looking at Nall off the market. If he knows he’s going to be a backup, it seems like Houston would be the best place to go. We’ve got great receivers, and our starting QB has a reputation for being injury prone. Essentially, we’d be buying a third round pick for whatever Nall costs. Depending on how much that is, it could definitely be worth it. Of course, that’s assuming that everything goes right, and Sage gets traded for a 3rd or better.

Does anyone have a link substantiating the Steelers and/or Nall talk? The link in the Chron doesn’t, and I generally don’t believe anything that doesn’t have someone putting his name on it.

It was on Rotoworld, and apparently was originally reported in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

@Andy@14: Thanks for the link. Also, remember that the Texans signed Nall as our third-string QB last year after Teh Schaub got hurt. Regardless, and disagreeing with Steph, but if we can get a 3rd for Sage, done and done!
-
@Andy@8: Yeah, but you don’t really see 1st or even 3rd round talent drop til the 6th. Anything after especially the 4th becomes a crap shoot. Sometimes you hit, sometimes you miss. Personally, I prefer getting the sure thing over a wild card.
-
Eric@6: Yes, please! Seriously, if we can pull off a deal like that, I would be elated.
-
@Eric@5: Yeah yeah. O’Douls. But, you know, it’s still better than Zima. Edit: And Curs Light.

Damnit, I meant Brady Quinn, not Tom Brady. I promise, I’ll never post before drinking coffee again.

Oooohhhhh. I get it now, Andy. You’re talking about trading back in the first and NOT the Myers swap. Tom Brady was drafted in the 6th round, so I was confused.
