Now, just a little to the left…oh yeah, that’s the spot

Pancakes, my new enemy #1, has posted a somewhat professional article saying the Texans have signed Quinn Gray to back up…well, he ain’t gonna be the #3 QB, I tell you what.

I don’t have a ton of time to go deep with this, but here are the quick hits:

1. Kubiak doesn’t carry a 3rd QB on the active roster.

2. Quinn did not sign to be on the practice squad.

3. As has been mentioned by me previously (too lazy to link, so see the next link), Rosie Rosenfels is on the block.

I think it’s just a matter of time before we see some dominoes start to fall, though I don’t know if it’ll look like my heavenly nirvana (the attendance of virgins may vary). I can say that I am excited about the possibilities, but I’m also not wearing any pants.

Let me end by reminding everyone who reads this blog that Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is personally responsible for every tax rate hike over the last 50 years.

PS: Chron? Suck. On. This. If it wasn’t personal before, it’s personal now.

    [...] He chose to come to the Texans, canceling other free agent trips, to be signed as a #3 behind #2 QB Sage Rosenfels? GM Rick Smith claims the Texans would like to carry three veteran quarterbacks to start the year, even though the Texans haven’t done that while coach Gary Kubiak has been running things. [...]

    Why isn’t anyone commenting on this blog post? I will start.

    Quinn Gray, IMO, passes the test as someone competant enough to take the #2 spot, especially after he gets the Kubiak treatment. Gives the Texans plenty of flexibility. He’s not so expensive that we have to get rid of Rosenfels, even for a so-so deal. It would be lovely for Rick Smith to pull a rabbit out of his hat.

    Pretty much everyone has already said this, but I don’t like signing him before we unload Rosenfels. We lose leverage.

    That said, I’m starting to like your Fabian Washington idea. He might be like Andre Davis; one of those highly touted high draft picks with the physical talent who never really panned out because he played on a bad team with a coaching carousel.

    Then again, that’s how Carolina fans justified David Carr… Still, Washington hasn’t exactly had a terrible career. I say go for it if all it takes is a third-rounder.

    @3 Nash.
    I’m not sure that you lose leverage signing Gray because there are a number of teams who could use good quarterback play.
    -
    Look at Rosenfels’ name on the NFL.com quarterbacks stats. He’s tons better than a lot of guys in the league.
    -
    The biggest problem with a trade was finding someone who could act as a #2 QB without a big drop off. Gray could be that guy. But his contract isn’t so hideous that you couldn’t carry him as a #3 if you got sorry offers for Rosenfels. So your leverage isn’t really messed up.
    -
    If there were only one team in the league that needed a QB, I think you lose leverage. I think having Gray on the team may embolden teams closer to the draft to come up with better deals for Rosenfels. There’s still a ton of teams that have held their powder.
    -
    I mean, in this draft class for example, who is going to go in the second round who is better than Rosenfels? And for those teams with undeveloped quarterbacks already, Rosenfels could definitely start and groom a baby quarterback without crushing your team.

    Where I think you really nailed it, Steph, is by calling it a seller’s market for QBs. In that case, cornering talent ain’t such a bad idea because you are actually increasing demand for available quantities, and you’ve got the excess.

    Which reminds me….

    The reason why we got Gray for so cheap is for two reasons:

    1) It’s only a one year contract which means either the Texans are testing the 3 qb system or (which I think) will trade Sage or,
    2) Drew Rosenhaus is Lance Briggs agent and just got a fat paycheck. So he didn’t try as hard, he was all like, “fuck it, your a back up.”

    @5 bfd

    Cornering the talent improves the leverage. +1

    “Coach Rick Smith?”

    Chapman, you obviously aren’t a journalist with years of experience meeting very important people and being told what to transcribe in the paper the next day.
    -
    On a different note, I can’t believe I missed that. Nice find, Chapman. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll go bang my head against a wall.

    Oh yeah, almost forgot: Big props to Andy for getting the first Pancakes reference on the Chron. I’ll admit it, I teared up a little

    Andy, BFD, and the rest of the cool-crew - What makes Andy’s reference so much more entertaining is that the Chronicle probably has no clue as to what it is even referring to or who it’s now attached to (Pancakes). That’s the gut-splitting part about all of it. When Andy posted it on the Fan Blog, I swear to God I had to change my underwear a few times. That type of moment is priceless.
