Day 2 Draft Open Thread

by bigfatdrunk

Sadly, Jamaal got snatched up by the Chiefs, but we nabbed Antwuan Molden, CB, Eastern KY. Yeah, he’s somebody I can root for. Wow. Specs remind me a bit of DRC.

Edit: 2nd 3rd Rounder: Steve Slaton, RB, WV - A little on the smallish size, which scares me, but legit home run ability. A good fall-back plan after losing out on Charles. Not sure if he’ll be more than a 3rd down back, though. I would’ve preferred Harrison or Thompson instead, but Slaton was #3 for me.

Edit: And with our 4th round pick, we take: Xavier Adibi, OLB, VaTech. He’s a fast dude, but a little on the smallish size. A little bigger but a little slower than Morlon Greenwood. Scott Wright’s NFL Countdown has him as the #4 OLB in the draft.

Edit: In his mother’s basement, Tim sprouts wood as our Texans take Frank Okam, DT, The University of Texas @ Austin. Yes, I like this one as well.

Edit: Ummmm, what? Dominique Barber with our 6th? I admit to knowing nothing about the guy. He was a S at Minnesota and is slow. *shrugs*

Courtesy of b0ng, how about a bong hit of Xavier Adibi?

Edit: In the 7th, we take Alex Brink, QB, Washington State.  Eh, not a ton of arm strength.  I think he’ll be our 2008 version of Jared Zabransky (watch the man-crush on this one, 1Tex.  Jared broke your heart.).

Heehee, Titans finally take a pass catcher in the third round and its a TE. Its like they know Radio can’t pass more than 4 yards with any accuracy.

I posted this comment in BFD’s Duane Brown thread, but I figured I’d post it again in the proper thread:

Based on his Combine scores, Molden certainly is certainly physically capable of playing in the NFL. Tons of upside with this pick. As Shake said, Smithiak usually rocks the later rounds, so I’ll breathe easy with this pick. Even though I think we got sniped again. I believe we were hoping for one of the two Charles’ - Jamaal or Godfrey - to be there for us…

More on Antwaun Molden, It sounds like he “looks the part” but doesn’t play very well. He didn’t even start a game until his Senior Year. This worries me.
Kiper says he’s “raw, don’t expect much his rookie year, but in two years he could be bad ass”..paraphrasing of course. I guess you cant coach fast as hell though.

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/antwaun-molden?id=2011

“Compares To: WILL ALLEN-Miami…Like Allen, there is no questioning Molden’s athletic ability and impressive looking frame. The concern is his inability to read and react to the play quickly. He is a good downhill tackler and solid man coverage defender in the short area, but struggles to close on plays when the receiver gets behind him on deep routes. He lacks natural hands for the interception and did not even start a game until his senior year. At his level of competition, he should have dominated, considering the mediocre receivers he faced in every game except the Kentucky clash. Yet, teams were successful on 48.1% of the passes thrown into his area, as he allowed 14.73 yards per pass completion (37 for 545 yards and three touchdowns). Based on athletic talent and his play with the kickoff coverage unit, he could make a nice later second day pick-up, but I feel that his downhill tackling ability would be a much better fit at free safety than playing cornerback at the next level.”

Molden I’m less sure about - but considering how the Ballhawk Gamecock stepped up, and with the addition of Rhodes… I’m ok with it. In Smithiak I trust. (Even the Brown pick after a night of drinking and a morning of hanging over.)

    From Slaton’s combine page :
    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/steve-slaton?id=945

    Analysis
Positives: Short, but has a powerful, compact frame. … Good initial quickness. … Good vision. … Good lateral agility to slide down the line and shows the burst to explode through the line when he sees the hole. … Rare acceleration into the open field. … Soft, secure hands out of the backfield.

Negatives: Lacks prototype size and explosiveness for the position. … Good acceleration to burst for big plays but there are questions about his ability to truly breakaway from defenders in the open field. … No major injuries over his career, but has a tendency to get nicked up. … Played in an offense perfectly suited to his ability. … With defenses spread out to protect against QB Pat White and others, Slaton often didn’t have to meet his first defender until a few yards past the line of scrimmage. … Has the skill set to be a return specialist, but has limited experience here.

It seems that Smithiak are allowing our new but venerable coaches (Rhodes and Gibbs) to “shop for the groceries” in an effort to shore up those areas of our team (Secondary and O-line). I think we’ll see more of that as the day goes on. I do hope we throw a couple of D-linemen in there as well…

I definitely think Gibbs is going to dig for some projects in the later rounds - 6/7. Other than that maybe depth at DL? A DE or a raw DT to spell Travistar and Amobe? LB depth? I’d say safety help but with Harrison last year another S at this point in the draft would be redundant.

What you guys think about Tommy Blake DE TCU? He had depression issues last year, when he was off of his meds, but man he can be great when he’s got his shit together. If we used a 6th or 7th round on him, it could pay off. Big risk / big reward.

(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

    Welcome Xavier Adibi
    —-
Overall: Adibi arrived at Virginia Tech in 2003 and was redshirted. In his first three seasons (2004-’06), he appeared in 32 games and recorded 176 tackles (18 for losses), eight sacks, six interceptions and four forced fumbles. As a senior, he started all 14 games at right inside linebacker and turned in 115 tackles (12 for losses), three sacks, a forced fumble, two interceptions and five pass breakups. He also had three career touchdowns with the Hokies (two interception returns, one fumble return). Adibi missed four games in 2004 because of a torn biceps muscle, which required surgery. He also missed much of one game in 2006 because of a shoulder stinger. Adibi isn’t stout against the run and his recognition skills are adequate at best. However, he is a fluid and sudden athlete that excels in pursuit and continues to add bulk to his frame. He can make plays

Hey, just woke up. First, I would have preferred Tashard Choice who, according to Lance Z, was the best late round running back fit for a ZBS; in any case, Steve Slaton is very good and he can work in with whomever is given the chance to start (healthy Ahman or healthy Taylor).

This is a huge homer pick but I thought our 6th round pick should have been Simeon Castille out of Alabama instead of the safety from Minnesota just because Castille can play CB or FS depending on need. We can still pick up a pass rusher like Wallace Gilberry in round 7 though. Basically as long as we pick an Alabama player I’ll call it a good draft.

It’s the practice squad for Brink if he’s lucky. I’m gonna stick by my prediction that we deal Sage during camp to somebody who’s QB goes down to injury or doesn’t live up to expectations. He’s a perfect choice for team that has that happen to them…

(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

Seriously, no one has drafted any Alabama players? I realize the rest of you don’t care but come on, DJ Hall is a very good wide receiver and Simeon Castille was thought of as one of the better safety prospects.

Oh well, I still say the Texans should bring Wallace Gilberry into camp if he’s not drafted, he’s alot like his ex-teammate Mark Andersen who was runner up DROY two years ago with the Broncos and could be a good situational pass rusher.

  56. 56 AstronautDinosaurFiretruck
(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

Just saw someone on ESPN make a great point that Steve Slaton as a small quick one cut back is very similar to a player that Alex Gibbs had for three years as a top rusher - Warrick Dunn. I had been iffy on the pick before and preferred Choice, now I am incredibly excited.

  57. 57 bigfatdrunk
(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

*shrugs* Sorry, ADF, you’re on your own with the Alabama references. I found them, well, boring to watch last year.
    -
My worries about Slaton are two-fold: he’s small, and was he the product of a system? He seemed to operate in space quite a bit, and the ZBS means hitting holes. I really, really wanted Charles and think he would’ve been perfect, but Slaton was a great fall-back.

  58. 58 nash
(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

If Brown pans out at LT, our o-line should be able to spring Slaton for some big runs. If not, he’s going to get beaten up trying to run between the tackles. Regardless though, I think it was a good pick. I heard somebody compare him to Kevin Faulk, and I think I like that. He’s quicker than Faulk, but has soft hands and should be able to accelerate off the screen pass.

We need a player like that, especially when we play teams like Tennesee who are going to shut down the line of scrimmage. Slaton ought to be able to make them respect the run/screen to the outside. And we might finally be able to stop running that stupid flat-pass to Jameel Cook. Imagine if every one of those plays had turned into an eight-yard gain instead of a fumble?

We painted ourselves into a corner without a 2nd rounder and ended up having to reach in the first, but I think rocked Day 2. Molden, Slaton, and Adibi are all quality guys, at least on paper. Overall, I say B+.

and: With their final pick, the Texans took 6-2, 212-pound Washington State quarterback Alex Brink, who passed for 10,913 yards and 76 touchdowns during his collegiate career. Both marks are Cougar records. Hmm, 7th round, alright, he sounds resonable. But what about our space eating punter?
