Only four QBs? Do we need more?
by bigfatdrunkIf there’s one thing on which we can rely on Pancakes (except for cleaning his plate with his tongue), it’s his ability to be the Texans’ stenographer. In his latest dictation, Pancakes is told that:
Even though (Duane) Brown played left tackle for only one season and offensive tackle for just three seasons at Virginia Tech, he’s going to get a baptismal by fire. In other words, assistant head coach Alex Gibbs and offensive line coach John Benton are going to put him in and let him learn on the run.
*gulp*
I’m not sure how much of this was strategized (heh) by the coaching staff in the off-season because it seems more like happy/life-threatening coincidence than anything else. However, if the coaches do expect Brown to start right off the bat, then that explains why we kept Rosie Rosenfels, signed Quinn Gray, and drafted Alex Brink. It could also explain why we’ve been trying to lure Commander Cody Carlson out of retirement {scours Internet for proof of rumor. Can’t find it.} Awww, fuck it, you read it here first!
I’m not saying Brown can’t handle LT…in two or three years, that is. There simply aren’t many college tackles whose names don’t rhyme with Darcus NcPeel who can start and play at a high level in the NFL their rookie season. That Brown has only been an OL for three years and a LT for one just magnifies the dysfunction of this decision.
Of course, the sense of urgency is driven by the fact that we’ll only get a year or two out of Alex Fucking Gibbs (h/t Steph). I can’t blame the man for wanting to get his pet into the starting lineup ASAFP, but I’m not looking forward to Brown matching up with Kyle “Baby Eating-Sister Fucker” Vanden Bosch, Dwight “Kitten Crusher” Freeney, and Derrick “Peaches” Harvey twice a year. Just scary, actually.
Brown is a project, and while I am normally for “trial by fire,” I think that we are taking our QB’s health a little too lightly with this decision.

Echoing Matt, thanks to everybody who stops by to visit. Life’s been extremely stressful lately, which is why I haven’t been too talkative, but I sincerely appreciate y’all.

Finally, is there a better hard reporter covering the Texans these days than SOLIS? His work simply embarrasses those who should be doing this kind of reporting for a living (aka, the entire staff of the Comicle). Well done, man.

I don’t think there’s all that much difference between Schaub, Rosenfels, and Gray, so I really don’t mind this… seems unlikely that all THREE of them would get their spleens shattered and if they do, maybe we can sign Chris Simms (you’ve only got one spleen, right?).

When I read that, I was kinda hoping they meant “baptismal by fire” like, “we’re going to give him a shit ton of reps in OTAs and camp because Salaam ain’t getting much better than he is right at this moment, and we’ll see what happens.” If, through all those reps, he becomes a better option than Salaam, I’m all for him starting Day 1, but I don’t foresee Kubes, much less Gibbs, rolling out a sub-standard LT, when their names are on the line and Salaami is serviceable.
Anyone? Bueller?

We’d be Jason Whitlock’s favorite team if we could find a spot on the roster for Jeff George!

@ Beef: Yeah, I thought the same thing when I first read it. My second thought was that McTard was making shit up again. I don’t think they’re going to risk the health of Shaub to test this guy, but I think they’re going to thrown him out there in OTAs and Training Camp to see what he can do. Running him up against Mario on a regular basis should give Kubes a good idea of what he can handle.

Echoing Vega and Beef…it’s to see what they have in him. From the Texans website today, Kubiak said:
“We’ve got to see how far we can bring this kid in the next month, so we put him right in there with the first group today,” Kubiak said. “And I know it was very tough on Ephraim, and y’all know I have a great deal of respect for Ephraim and I can understand why it was tough, but as I explained to him, I’ve got to see how far I can bring this young man. But I know Ephraim’s going to do his job and I’m expecting good things from him, but we felt like we had to put this kid to work right away.”
If he continues to struggle in training camp, I have a hard time believing they keep him out there.

@ Vega: Completely agree. Facing Mario head-to-head and Okoye/Okam off stunts should be a pretty fair measuring stick for the coaching staff this summer.

Eh, third round Charles Spencer started over Salaam, ergo, non-surprise if Brown starts over Salaam.

Actually, my term of art is “Alex Freaking Gibbs” but that is mere quibbling. I am guessing my version would violate the DGDB&D terms of service.

My minicamp thoughts are now up at FanHouse.

Like an asshole, I had to write and run. BUT, I am very interested in the responses. Essentially, you’re all calling me an asshole, which is always fine, but in an odd unanimity. In addition, there’s a post on battleredblog.com that insinuates the same thing.

My worry, ultimately, is that there is a big difference between Schaub and Rosey. Yes, it’s true that Rosey put up warm and fuzzy numbers last year, but he’s still a career backup. Schaub has considerable potential, and I do stress about about Brown protecting his blind side. In addition, if you have to add help, you essentially negate Owen Daniels from the passing game. Or do you plug in Dreesen and send Apostrophe or, hatefully, JJ to the bench?

I have no problem being proved wrong, but I’m still stressed about all this.

No te preocupes amigo.

D. Brown has always risen to the occasion. I’m sure his development will continue throughout this first year. And - if he can’t handle the load, we have a reliable stand-in.

I’ve been on hiatus the last few days. Mix in a trip to sea world, my kid’s birthday, mother’s day, and Spurs playoff basketball… well you get the point. But yeah, I wanted to say thanks for the recognition. I ‘preciate it bro.
