Cracklin’ Rosy

Well, that was certainly interesting.  And surprisingly informative, really.  But, back to what really matters.  According to the Boston Globe,

Former Patriots outside linebacker Rosevelt Colvin, now a free agent, is scheduled to visit the Houston Texans today.

I know we have a solid starter at WLB and three guys vying for the title of starting SLB, but I like this move.  I like it a lot, actually.  Colvin is definitely on the downward slope of his career, but he would bring the kind of veteran leadership (and winning experience) that a young LB corps can always benefit from, as well as being a mentor for Zac Diles as Diles transitions to the outside.

The short article also mentions that Colvin previously met with the Colts.  If we can get him on the cheap, I think you’ve got to make this move.  Worst case scenario, you cut him loose if he can’t hack it.  Best case, though, he gives you a solid backup to Diles (sorry, Kevin) and makes it so Chaun Thompson is more expendable and more able to be used as a pass-rushing DE opposite Mario.  Win-win, baby!

That’s all I’m talkin about! Hey I noticed on Houston Diehards that we cut Chukky Okobi and signed a new guy. I knew he was put on IR but didn’t hear the rest. Wow where can we get good info other than the blogs…hmmmm

This is an example of how things changed under Smith/Kubiak.
    -
Never be satisified with the roster you have and keep on exploring who is out there that you can acquire in a way that make sense. Vets will help the youngins in training camp, and if they are any good and stay healthy, they stay, and if they aren’t any good, they go. Keep throwing bodies at positions of weakness until they become positions of strength.
    -
An example of where they did well in this regard was helping the WR position last year when everyone had questions about the #2 WR spot. To a lesser degree of success, they did it with the CB position, basically acquiring any guy who they thought maybe could still play.
    -
In the pre-Kubiak days, they would get free agents at about 10-30% more than anyone else would pay, ink them into the starters job because they spent so much money, and watch the awfulness until it was too awful.
    -
Kubiak/Smith will get free agent acquisitions but they won’t play them unless they feel that they deserve to play because they are better than everyone else.
    -
Victor Riley was an amazing example of that rule.
He was your starting left tackle in 2005.
He was cut before the end of the season.
How many times do you cut your starting left tackle before the season ends?

Dammit! I wanted to write this one!

This is super-exciting. Colvin has been one of my favorite guys to watch for a couple of years. Even if he only comes back at 75%, this would be an impact signing.

That’s what you get for having a real job.

Agreed with every thought so far.

Hey, 1Texan – the check’s in the mail, buddy. :)

I just have to chime in and agree that this would be a great signing – and also add that the talk of his injury problems are greatly exaggerated. I mean, he had issues last year, but he played in all their games in the three previous years to that.

This would be some great veteran leadership, and Colvin can joke around with the Texan’s offensive line about how he wore David Carr as a hat in that game a couple of years ago.

Apparently, the jury is still out:

The only thing that worries me is his “When reached Wednesday, Colvin declined to comment”.

The comments on him backing up the LBs and freeing up Chaun for rushing the passer are interesting because what I’ve seen so far indicates that the Texans are interested in having Colvin be the pass rusher. In any sense, I’m definitely in favor of this move.

@ Vega: Well, yeah, ideally he’d come into camp, be the baddest motherfucker on the planet, and take the STARTING SLB job. That would be awesome.

What I meant was that I got the impression that the Texans weren’t looking at him to be a traditional LB type, but more of a situational pass rusher. The dudes got some mileage on him and was injured last year (although he played through it) and the Texans seem to be moving in a direction of putting in young, fast LBs that can fly all over the field causing all sorts of trouble. Colvin doesn’t seem to really fit that mold, but he can rush the shit out of the QB.
