Saturday Night Tunes

Perhaps another new feature?  I don’t know.  But, you know, why not?

Matt and I love music.  If you were there for the draft, you got a taste of many music genres.

So, what are you listening to these days?  Me?

Mogwai - I’ve been digging the hard-rock instrumental sounds lately.

CanOx - Just part of the Aesop Rock phase I can’t seem to shake.

Robert Earl Keen - Sometimes, I have to stick to my Texas roots.

What say you?  What are you listening to?

Interesting topic… I have Fight of the Conchords (Self Titled), Death Cab for Cutie (Narrow Stairs), M Ward (Post War), Built to Spill (You in Reverse), MGMT (Oracular Spectacular) and Hayes Carll (Flowers and Liquor) in heavy rotation.

I’m a Mogwai fan as well… at least for the one album I have. Songs for Happy People or some shit.

I love Outlaw Country, but loathe every other form.

I’m also a metalhead… and I also love classical, esp. Mozart, Chopin, and Liszt.

I’m pretty much all over the place. I’m also a big gangsta rap fan… but I pretty much hate all rap and hip hop that came after it.

So yeah, I’m pretty much all over the place… and it’s only been in the last five years or so that I finally got to the “I hate everything on the radio” stage. Though, I do love KGSR in Austin, and the Austin classical station. All the other stations can pretty much go make fuck.

Yeah dude the draft music went from old school to new school.

Been listening to STP a lot, getting myself pumped up for the big show when they come to houston. Hopefully crackhead george doesn’t go in a coma or overdose.

Aesop and Del the Funky Homosapien. Always a good listen. And if you’re looking for hard rock insturmentals check out the texas band called Explosions in the Sky and By the End of Tonight.

Hmmmm….For instrumental only, I’d have to pick Crystal Method. As for the “stuff” with actual lyrics…all over the place, but Nine Inch Nails has been in heavy play for me lately.

@Matt & Diehardchris: Mogwai? Are those the things from “Gremlins”?

Good call on Explosions. Haven’t heard of By The End Of Tonight. Check out Pelican. It’s my personal mental soundtrack for hurting Zoolander.

That M. Ward album is great, lifter. I got my money’s worth on “right in the head” and “Chinese translation”. And you know what time it is when I’m down to just my socks…

Vampire Weekend (self-titled) –> It’s just good upbeat music

RJD2 –> good mix of beats and lyrics

The Roots “Rising Down” –> not as good as Phrenology (in my opinion) but still a really solid album

Jimi Hendrix –> because he’s the fucking man.

Explosions in the Sky are awesome. Love that band. I want to catch them live, but last time I checked they were scheduled to be in Europe for several months.

@Displaced Texan. I always knew you had great taste.

Lately, I’ve been in the mood for Ratatat’s debut, Led Zepplin’s debut (”Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” and I have been best buds for the last few weeks), and Santana’s Greatest Hits.

@6: Mogwai is the man-cub from the Jungle Book. Duh. ;-)

    Currently my playlist includes:
    Bob Dylan
    Ryan Adams
    Reprazent feat. Roni Size
    Ben Harper
    Old Crow Medicine Show

Wow, awesome comments! I might have to make this a sorta regular thing when I am sober enough to remember.
    -
@TPL: Wow, a TPL sighting??? How’s it going with the new family member???
    -
@DHC: Yeah, outside of KGSR, the Austin stations are all ass now, which is sad.
    -
@DT: Totally forgot to list Vampire and RJD2.
    -
I can’t wait for my emusic sub to renew next month!

I have no monetary interest in the site, but I was an early adopter and continue to use this site almost daily. Even after some heavy pruning recently, I’ve got over 12,000 songs in my library.

BFD- Bbypwrlifter is crawling around hitting her head on things. I don’t think it’s on purpose but if it is, she might be Mack’s first female recruit for his 2026 class at OLB. Depends on that 40 time…

    @DiehardChris

Explosions is great live. They play just completely non-stop, and leave it all on the stage. Plus, you can’t help feeling like you could run through a brick wall when you listen to them.

In a similar vein, there’s a band out of San Marcos called This Will Destroy You that slots somewhere between EITS and Mogwai. Mostly rock, a little electronic. Good stuff.

Personally, I’ve been jamming The Whigs and I still can’t get Boxer by The National out of my playlist.

@ Ted - I know nothing of This Will Destroy, but that sounds like something I would like. I’ll check them out, thanks for the rec! Their ACL performance is what turned me on to Explosions, and I too was blown away by that for the same reasons you mentioned. I see they’re going to lay low for a while to work on a new album, but I’m sure they’ll sneak out locally a couple of times to play live… when they do, I’m there.

@Ted Striker: Good call on The National. If you do not have it, I would recommend the previous album “Alligator”. Very nice.

You know I had to get in on this…

In my six disc player I’ve got:

    Prince Paul: Itstrumental
Beat Junkies: World on Wheels Vol 1
    Paul Simon: Graceland
    POS: Ipecac Neat
Felt: Vol 2 - A tribute to Lisa Bonet
Here come the ABCs: They Might Be Giants (TMBG put out a series of preschool-centric albums. Fuckin Robot Parade bitches).

I’ve also been listening to a lot of DJ Z-Trip. One of the best - hands down. Whenever you can mix “Jane Says” with “The Anthem”… man.
Sidenote: If you dig turntablism - beg, borrow, or steal a copy of “Scratch” It’s a DVD documentary on the art. Great stuff.

In my attempt to continue this topic…

I am now leaving the office to go to the gym and check out for the first time the new NIN music (”the Slip”) on my iPod while I run…

  25. bigfatdrunk
(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

The Slip is fine, but not his best stuff. I dunno, I guess I liked NIN in the old days, but they are only OK for me these days.
    -
RJD2 reminds me of Tapes n Tapes, which isn’t a bad thing.
    -
And, if you are into punk, gotta plug The Urgencies.
