Kickoff

They said “no, you can’t do that he’s a live bear; he will literally rip your face off.” Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your attention?  I’ve just been handed an urgent and horrifying news story. I need all of you to stop what you’re doing and listen. SIX DAYS UNTIL TRAINING CAMP!!!

It’s called Sex Panther by OdeonNice interview with the BRB gang by the Big Cat Country blog.  I don’t want to spoil any surprises regarding future DGDB&D posts, but let’s just say I disagree with this line from the Cats blog’s author: [T]he Texans have two definite playoff teams in the Jaguars and Colts ahead of them[.]

If you want to throw down fisticuffs, fine. I’ve got Jack Johnson and Tom O’Leary ready for ya. Scouts.com has a breakdown of the roster.  Nothing new, but, hey, what do you expect this time of year?  Honestly.  Wait…you expect what!?  Sicko.  (Call me.)

Great site! I know you’ll despise anything I write about the Texans, but I approached that article with a good amount of respect.

And I hope you are implying that the Colts are going to fall short of the playoffs, cause I can’t see a realistic situation where the Jaguars aren’t in the mix unless everything we know about the team is completely and utterly wrong.

@BigCatCountry: I thought your article was great and that it was balanced enough that I can’t hate on it. (Unlike, for instance, stuff written by the owners of the other non-Texans AFC South blogs).
    -
As for my other comment, my general premise that I don’t think you (or anyone) know as much about the team as it seems at first glance. Anyway, that will be the premise of the post(s). I hope you’ll comment when they come up.

Just added my uh… more that two cents, to the Big Cat entry. I have to say, I like that blog. So far, it’s the most fair and level-headed of all the rival team blogs I’ve seen. Smart guys over there.

I honestly see the Jags at 7-9 and the Texans at 9-7 this year. As it always goes in the AFC Souph, head-to-head play is going to be huge.

But I’m the dude who claims the Rams are back and will win the NFC West, so whatthefuckdoIknow?

  6. BigCatCountry
(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

Nice. I’m spending some exile time in Missouri as part of my work (political nonsense), and Rams fans are an interesting group. Some full of hope, others painfully pessimistic.

The NFC West is a pretty screwy division though, someone HAS to win it, but god knows who.

7-9, I’d cry. I say this honestly, this is the best Jaguars team they’ve put on the field since 1999, and if it’s only good enough to win 7 games, it’ll be time to fire EVERYONE and start over.

@Matt: Most Def. Keep me posted, I look forward to reading it.

You’ll find that while I’m optimistic about the Jaguars season, I’m very much a “we’ll know when we see it” about their chances.

(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

@bigwood25: I like you more all the time. I don’t know if I’ll go 7-9 for them, but I have my reasons for seeing a downturn THIS year. (I stress the “this” because the team is good and will certain not go through an extended down period.) What do you have for the Dolts and the BESFs?
    -
@BigCatCountry: Dude, as someone who went to law school in St. Louis (WASHU REPRUHZENT!), I feel for you. That city would be great if it wasn’t for the St. Louisans. Try to get over to Kansas City if work allows and I’ll recommend BBQ places (not Arthur Bryant’s). Or I can recommend the greatest steak in the entire world. Just hit me up.

@Matt: You won’t believe it, but I’m a place far far worse. Springfield. Just north of Branson, capital of Ozarkia, where old country singers go to retire/die.

KC is pretty tight though, I’d love to know where to get some good food up there.

Every go to East St. Louis? I was at a convention in STL and me, my coworker, and two women who were very much into women ended up at Larry Flint’s club in East St. Louis. Very strange times, to say the least.

As for East St. Louis, we went there for a friend’s bachelor party. “Full Contact Stripclub” are three of the greatest words in the English language.

The Majestic in the old part of downtown KC. It is so good, the waiters get pissed if you ask for steak sauce. I’ve eaten steak all over the world and none has even come remotely close.

@matt: Would your wife mind it if you married another woman? I used to go there at least 2x/month. Not only for the steak, but also for the incredible Jazz! I’m amazed that you would even DARE to ask for steak sauce at that place…definitely didn’t need it. I am impressed…

Don’t be reeeediculous, I would never ask for sauce. I just got a kick out of the dude beside us asking for “Country Bob’s.”

I am even more impressed with you now. I use The Majestic as a measuring stick for whether I should trust someone’s judgment. You pass.

@matt: YES…loved it! That was one of those places that not everyone really knew about, but was just a great place to “git down-n-dirty”. Nutin’ like going to Troost for a night out on the town. OK..so not the “real” Troost, but still…Svetlana would be hangin’ more around Prospect and 35th. I stayed as far south of 63rd as possible.

The Majestic is the only steakhouse other than Pappas Brothers in Houston that can touch a steak I make at home (yes they are both better). I love that place like a fat kid loves cake. I’ve only been twice, but it is two times I will never forget

FOOMEY NEEDS REAL EFFIN BBQ DAMMIT!!! I’m going through pulled pork withdrawl…I’m sick of brisket. I’m sick of smoked turkey being called bbq. HELP! HELP! HELP! From The Majestic site
Our steaks are guaranteed! Your steak will be tender and full of delicious flavor or we will be glad to replace it. Please let your server know immediately if your steak is not just right. Steaks can be either grilled over an open flame or sauteed in butter. The Chef recommends rare or medium rare for all of our steaks. Well done steaks take considerably longer to prepare, may be less tender and are not guaranteed.

Basically, they are telling you that you are stupid if you don’t get it rare or medium rare. And you are

  27. Matt

@Lee - UofTOrange: The one place where I prefer medium rare to medium. Mainly because it’s the one place where medium well guarantees medium well.

@Lee - UofTOrange: Depends on what you want. KC can’t hold a candle when it comes to brisket, but I’ve yet to find ribs in Texas as good as KC or Memphis. Especially Memphis. Cozy Corner in Memphis is orgasmic.

@Matt: You need to come down to Rodeo cook-off this year. My tent will be glad to show you better ribs than in KC. We have one of the few family spots left(my wife’s family, yet another reason she rules). Steve’s tent was there since my father in law owned his own BBQ place in H-Town. He’s disabled and retired now, but we carry on the tradition. We cook spare ribs, brisket and chappel hill/elgin sauusage every year. We also have an infinite amount of beer and a pit that is so big that it fit into an old refrigerated truck trailer.

@Matt: (drooling…seriously…drooling here!) OK! I’m all aboard. TX Monthly just published their TX BBQ roadtrip issue. Gave the list of all the best BBQ joints to see. I think we should have our own version….KC style. BTW, Matt, Cozy Corner was just featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives on Food Network. AND…I lived about 1.5 miles from Oklahoma Joe’s!!! Now you are really gonna make me cry. I used to go there every week for their pulled pork and sausage. Don’t laugh, but I actually preferred Wyandott BBQ’s burnt ends. The rest of their stuff was crappy, but I think they had some of the best burnt ends in KC. I could also just live at Jack Stacks. Really…I’d just crawl into a ball on the floor of their pit, and die in a smokey, fiery goodness that we call BBQ. We need to take some of these here Texans to KC, and show them how BBQ should really be done! Roadtrip? I’ll call my madre, and ask if she can house 25 or so people.(yeah right)

(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

@Lee - UofTOrange: I have been to the City Market in Luling. I will admit…it was good. Funny story about that. Picture, if you will, a well-dress Account Sales Manager(wearing a white shirt) walks into said BBQ joint. She orders a smattering of all their offerings.(she hasn’t been there before, so must evaluate all they have to offer) She finds it “cute” that they don’t have plates, but instead serve it on butcher paper. “No biggie”, she thinks…but then thinks again as she is a tree-hugging liberal…”That’s a lot of trees they are killing by using all that butcher paper.” I digress…She gets some of the pickled cauliflower they also offer. She puts down her makeshift “plate” of goodies, and quickly looks around the joint for the silverware station. She finds it…or so she thinks. There’s paper-towels. There are plastic knives. There are bottles of orangey-pink bbq “sauce”. There are plastic spoons for the (I hate them) borracho beans. No forks. HUH? Perhaps they were out. I walked up to a woman that was probably Jesus’ first wife, and politely asked, “Where are the forks?” She laughed…cackled really…and replied in the cutest TX accent I’ve heard yet…”Darlin’, those white things in yer mouth are yer fork.” Okkeeedokeeee….My shirt went from white to bbq polka dot after that little lunch. I’d go back.

(click arrow to reply)Reply to this comment

@Vega: Sadly, I’m not exaggerating at all when I say there is not much good BBQ in St. Louis. There used to be a mom-and-pop shop on Delmar just East (?) of Debalivier that was decent, and a place opened in Clayton just before I left that was solid, but that’s about it. Everything else is chain food and not worth the cash. If you are going to StL, just break down and get the good Italian food.

With Brown getting a little love from the coaches, as well, perhaps our secondary goes from flammable to average. I do see a feasible scenario that, heading into Week 9, our weakest link back there is Ladies Man Demps.
