Vaya con dios, asqueroso grande
Jul 22, 2008 2006 Draft, 2008 Draft, 2008 Season, Barbaro is dead, Charles Spencer, Curious Coaching, Duane Brown as Eliza Doolittle, Roster, Tim Bulman
First, my Spanish sucks. Sorry if my translation is off.
Anyway, by now I’m sure you’ve heard that Charles “Big Nasty” Spencer was released today. I don’t think any of us expected him to be the LT of the future, especially after the arrival of Alex Gibbs and Duane Brown. Nor do I think anyone was shocked that a round of cuts came today considering that the team had to get down to 80 players by Friday and the easiest way to get there was to get rid of the guys least likely to make the team. (Which is also why DGDB&D fave Jon Abbate as well as DT Eric Powell and G Dan Stevenson were sent packing this afternoon.)
No, I guess the only surprise, to the extent that there is one, is that Spencer was listed among the guys least likely to make the team, ahead of (or behind, I guess) such notables as TE Ryan Krause and/or 5-10 WR Mark Simmons. Nothing against those guys, but you’d think that seeing what (if anything) Spencer had in the tank would be worth more than seeing what Mark Simmons brings to the table. (Editor’s guess: Not much.)
In other, slightly related news while we are talking about roster space, I am still baffled about our continued employment of Bryan Pittman when THREE other Texans (Dreessen, Bulman, and Zgonina) can do his job while simultaneously not being limited to ONLY doing his job. Dreessen would actually be the perfect dude to fill the dual role, as he is not asked to do much in the TE department on most days.

As a Wake grad, I’m sad to see Abbate go.
Since he nearly made the team last year until he got hurt, I wonder if his cut means the Texans might only go with one FB this year to make room for an extra RB?
Probably not. Just trying to make myself feel better about the loss of my Deacon Texan.
With the 80 man limit, Spencer’s 2nd game might have been his last. Sad.

I actually did look around for long snapper stats, and I couldn’t find any. Perhaps one of your fine readers can dig that up… but I think Pittman is one of the better ones in the NFL, with that San Diego/Matt Turk disaster being his only recent mistake.

Don’t think I forgot about that play. Fucking Matt Turk. The least athletic man in the NFL. KICK THE FUCKING BALL OUT OF THE ENDZONE, DICK!!

@DiehardChris: I’ve heard the same thing, but I wonder if being the best longsnapper is more like being the smartest guy at OU or the ugliest chick at OU?

@DiehardChris: That play may well have been the worst thing these eyes have ever seen. And I am a Texans fan.

Have you ever considered think listing the upcoming Houston season schedule over on the right side of the homepage?

@bigwood25: We are going to do a big site redesign at some point in the near(ish) future, so I will definitely have that on there. I’d like to have it auto-update with point spreads and shit.

Love the spreads bit. That’d be bad ass. I also yearn for a Top 5 Faves current/all-time post soon…that would actually be a pretty good discussion generator with this bunch.
I’m officially on the Chris Long bandwagon by the way. He’ll never be as good as your Super Mario, but I don’t think 8-10 sacks this year is out of the question.

Oh, and the ONLY “Big Nasty” ’round chere is Mr. Corliss Williamson, sir.

@Tim: At least the Texans have never had a kicker that probably even pissed crooked, like Lin Elliot. I was at this game, and I’ve NEVER, EVAR, EVAR been more fucking pissed in my life!!! They even came out with a cartoon of him pissing and missing the toilet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_playoffs,_1995-96. I guess I hold a grudge, even 12 years later.

As former Missourians, there’s no way Matt or I could forget that Lin Elliot fiasco. Unbelievable.
Still, having choking ass Elvis Grbac replace a completely en fuego future-MVP Rich Gannon just before the playoffs a couple years later was far more disgusting to me. “Starters don’t lose their jobs to injury.” OR you move the old crippled bastards to second string and get your occassional Tom Brady* out of the mix.
*didn’t have the heart to say “Marc Bulger” here. I still love Kurt Warner. Thank you, Jesus.

@bigwood25: OK..you have a point with Elvis “I had to have sucked someone’s cock to get this gig” Grbac, but I still harbor the bad feelings for Lin.

He single-handedly made the Ravens a one-year dynasty. SO bad he just had to get the fuck out after that. Biggest choke job QB that ever played the game. Forgot your Michigan loyalty, you KNOW it’s true.

I think I remember something about Pittman having one of the longest streaks without a bad snap until that Stanley fiasco last year….I think that might have been his first…..or I’m just making shit up again. Either way I’ve wanted to see the Texans quit tying up a roster spot with him for years.
-
Everyone says that Spencer was doomed as soon as Gibbs was hired, but remember when they drafted him they thought that he was better suited to the(usually more athletic) LT spot than Caveman.I know we are now running a true Zone system…and he could have put on some more weight, and I think there was some concern about Caveman’s short arms at LT….I just don’t think Gibbs made Spencer an automatic casualty.
