Post Ike Open Thread

Still waiting to hear back from some peeps on how they made out this weekend.  Matt is getting blasted by the storm right now.  Here in Austin, we got nothing except for wind, and even tonight, it’s calm and muggy.  In other words, typical.

So, as you uncover, please chime in.

Also, with Matt kinda outta service and me over-whelmed with homework, with no game this weekend, posting might be a little light.

Here’s the latest on the matchup with the Poe birdies:

Houston was originally scheduled to play the Bengals on Nov. 9. Now, those teams will play on Oct. 26 and Cincinnati will take its bye week on Nov. 9, when the Texans now play the Ravens.

Both the Ravens and the JUGGERNAUT will adversely be impacted by missing the normally scheduled bye week.

Consider this both an Open Thread and a Saturday Night Tunez thread.  Here are a couple of tunez for the occasion:

Pine Island Bayou - The Gourds

Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan

Who’ll Stop the Rain - CCR

And absolutely one of the all-time greatest songs: Tupelo - John Lee Hooker

For those of you in the path: Stay high.  Stay dry.

Saturday Night Sunday Morning Tunez

Been a few weeks, so what is everyone listening to these days?

  • Arrested Development–3 Years, 5 months, 2 days in the Life of…. I don’t know if it was all the talk about the BE-SFs in the last weeks or what, but I had the song “Tennessee” in my head for about five days before I broke down and re-bought this album.  (I couldn’t find my old copy.)  I had forgotten how cool this was around 1991.  And, yes, if you look at the demographics of Polk County, MO, it seems absurd that I was listening to message hip-hop in 8th grade.
  • Radney Foster–Del Rio, Texas, 1959.  “A Fine Line” and “Hammers and Nails” are fantastic.  “Just Call Me Lonesome” should’ve been a huge hit for someone who didn’t look like a librarian.
  • Notorious B.I.G.–Born Again.  “Dead Wrong” is as good as anything Biggie did while he was alive.

With apologies to Oasis

Wonderlic
by: Vince Young

This year is s’posed to be the year
That I’m gonna learn to lead a team
Or not, since I just forgot
Everything ‘Dinger taught to me
I don’t believe that they expect me
To memorize an entire playbook

Last week the word was on the street
That the fire in my heart was out
Forget I said I almost quit
Because I never really had a doubt
I don’t believe that they expect me
To memorize an entire playbook

And I’m sure the way I play this year will hurt us
But at least the guys I’m dancing with are shirtless
Our mascot is a Babyeating
Sisterfucker, too
But I don’t care!

Tenn-ess-eeee
You know I fit in cuz I can’t read
3-4-5-6
It’s my Wonderlic

I know Gage is wide open
But I’d rather just tuck and run
Throwin’ deep, man that ain’t for me
Interceptions ain’t no fun
I don’t believe that they expect me
To memorize an entire playbook

And all the fans who watch me play are meth-mouthed
And all of them have wheels underneath their house
Our mascot is a Babyeating
Sisterfucker, too
But I don’t care!

Tenn-ess-eeee
You know I fit in cuz I can’t read
3-4-5-6
It’s my Wonderlic

Tenn-ess-eeee
You know I fit in cuz I can’t read
3-4-5-6
It’s my Wonderlic

Tenn-ess-eeee
Where people just love to inbreed
Where they’ve got no shoes on their feet
Where they really think I’m a Q-B

Welcome to the greatest city of aaalllllllllll…

Continuing my theme of “Christ, why won’t this fucking season start already,” I present the song that makes all of us cringe before home games (even though we all secretly don’t hate it):

Note: This is my first attempt at embedding an mp3 from my own computer.  Let me know if it works for you.

Update: How’s about now, peoples?

Saturday Night Tunes!

As I wait for a response from my prof on the worst midterm in the history of mankind, here’s what I’m listening to besides Jim Nabors, natch:

The latest Los Lonely Boys - eh, not bad, but they really haven’t recaptured the magic of their debut.  In fact, a couple of songs flat out suck, but a couple are quite good.

Balkan Beat Box - Guh-reat reading music for me.

I’m really looking forward to picking up Alejandro Escovedo’s latest “Real Animal.” If anybody has listened to this one, I’d love to hear about it.

And, hey, what can I say?  Kids?  Check!  July 4th?  Check!  School House Rock?  Oh yeah.

What about you people?  I love to call you “you people.”  Makes me feel big.

Saturday Night Sunday Morning Tunes

Here we go again.  I’ve spent the entire week listening to UGK’s “Ridin’ Dirty,” so I don’t have much to add to this discussion.  Instead, in honor of BFD’s sister, I present Top 5 Songs About A Sibling.

5. Holy Water, Big & Rich.

4. Brotherly Love, Keith Whitley and Earl Thomas Conley.

3. Sister Christian, Night Ranger.

2. Daniel, Elton John.

1. Beautiful Brother of Mine, Curtis Mayfield.

Also receiving votes: My Brother’s A Basehead, De La Soul; The Bewlay Brothers, David Bowie; You and Your Sister, This Mortal Coil.

EDIT: Also, consider this your usual “What I’m Listening To” post and feel free to comment accordingly.  Bonus points if you are listening to De La Soul.

Saturday Night Tunes

This went over pretty well when BFD posted it last time.  So, same deal, what are you listening to these days?  I’ve been in a very eclectic (even for me) mood over the last week.

  • Wade Bowen, Lost Hotel
  • Aesop Rock, Labor Days
  • The Band, Greatest Hits (side note: Apparently my mother-in-law knew Levon Helm in college…odd)
  • Pearl Jam, Ten

Saturday Night Tunes

Perhaps another new feature?  I don’t know.  But, you know, why not?

Matt and I love music.  If you were there for the draft, you got a taste of many music genres.

So, what are you listening to these days?  Me?

Mogwai - I’ve been digging the hard-rock instrumental sounds lately.

CanOx - Just part of the Aesop Rock phase I can’t seem to shake.

Robert Earl Keen - Sometimes, I have to stick to my Texas roots.

What say you?  What are you listening to?
